Jim "Mouse" Chacko A 1959 graduate of Charleroi, Jim Chacko starred in basketball, football, baseball and track and field. Mouse's 700 points scored during his senior year remains the single-season school standard at Charleroi. A three-year starter and All-WPIAL and All-State selection in basketball, Chacko helped the Cougars compile a 70-9 cumulative record. The Cougars won the WPIAL championship during his junior season with a victory over Washington High School in the title game. Chacko was selected as a national High School All-American in basketball. He declined Major League Baseball contract offers from both the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs to accept a baseball scholarship to Los Angeles State College in California. Chacko also earned All-State honors in football and basketball. |

Katie Deicas Katie DeiCas was a WPIAL high-jump champion as a junior and WPIAL long-jump champion as a senior. She was also a standout girls soccer player. She went on to be a star long-jumper and then assistant track and field coach at Lehigh University

Ollie Payne Payne, a first-team all-state scholastic selection in both football and basketball, finished his high school career as the Cougars' career-leading basketball scorer. He helped Charleroi win the 1958 WPIAL Class AAA boys basketball championship. Payne accepted a basketball scholarship at Arizona State University, where he was a three-year starter. Payne passed away at the age of 55. |

Myron Pottios A four-sport star who graduated in 1957, Pottios was an All-State fullback and linebacker who helped the Cougars reach the 1956 WPIAL Class AA title game, where they lost by three points to Jeannette High School. Pottios became an All-American linebacker and team captain at the University of Notre Dame before playing 13 years in the National Football League including stints with the Steelers, Rams, and Redskins. |

John Shelapinski After starring in football, baseball and basketball for the Cougars, Shelapinsky landed a scholarship to Duquesne University. He played all three sports in college one year before leaving to sign a pro baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers at the age of 21 in 1936. Shelapinsky posted some impressive coaching records in the junior high ranks at first Fallowfield and then Charleroi. At Fallowfield, his gridders went 50-8 with 10 section titles in 13 seasons (1952-65) and the basketballers went 190-70 with four section championships. He also went 24-5-1 with three championships in six seasons at Charleroi Junior High and coached football on the high school level with Rab Currie. "Mr. Shell" died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007.

Fred Uhlman Fred Uhlman played professional baseball after his scholastic days and pitched for Minor League teams in both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Indians organizations. He went on to a distinguished career of more than 30 years as a Major League Baseball scout for both Baltimore and Cincinnati. He starred in baseball and basketball at Charleroi. |

Pete Cherocci Pete is considered one of the best runningbacks to play for Charleroi High School. He was chosen to the All-State team in both his junior and senior years. He also played basketball for the Cougars. He continued his career at California State College before he was drafted
into the United States Army. With the Army, he continued his career. Cherocci
was named Back of the Season and was selected to the Western Conference
All-Star team in the European league. He averaged 6.8 yards a carry in
15 games in leading his team in rushing.. |

Shellie Cotton Shellie led the WPIAL in scoring her senior year and finished her high school career with 199 goals. These 199 career goals ranks her first on the all-tiime WPIAL scoring list. She is also second in the season goal scoring with 70. She was named to as an All American in 2000. Shellie continued playing at West Virginia Weslian were she was named WVIAC Women's Soccer Players of the Year in 2003 |

James "Rab" Currie When one thinks of football in the Mid-Mon Valley, Rab Currie's name is synonymous with the game. In 36 seasons as head coach Monessen and Charleroi, his teams won 212 games, lost 106, and tied 10. His record is embellished by winning the conference championship outright five times (1951-56-57-59-62) and sharing it four times (1949-55-58-70). Currie coached Charleroi teams that reached the Class AA WPIAL title playoffs twice. His 1956 outfit, led by Myron "Mo" Pottios who later starred at Notre Dame and for the Steelers, Rams, and Redskins in the NFL, lost to Jeannette 16-13 on a field goal by Jim Burzio in the final four seconds. In 1959, the Cougars upset Carl Aschman's heavily-favored Aliquippa 13-12 at Pitt Stadium. He was the first coach in the WPIAL to win over 200 games. He was named "Coach of the Year" in 1962 and 1977. He retired from coaching after the 1977 season. He also coached basketball at Charleroi, where his teams posted a 101-39
record and captured three sectional titles in six seasons (1948-53). At
Charleroi, Currie also performed duties as athletic director and recreation
coordinator. |

Jack Green Graduated from Charleroi in 1949. During his high school career, Jack earned 11 high school letters; four in both football (4), baseball (4)and basketball (3). Jack enrolled in Duquesne University on a football scholarship. While at Duquesne, Jack also participated in in baseball. Jack also officiated football and basketball at both the high school and college levels. |

Darrell Harding Darrell became the WPIAL leading rusher in 1991 with 5410 yards. He was named to to the All-Conference team all 4 years of high school.and rushed for over 1000 yards as a freshman. He was named as an All-State performer his senior year and participated in the Big 33 game. Darrell played four years of basketball for the Cougars and 1 year on the track team. Darrell accepted a full scholarship to the University of Cincinnati and was a four year letterwinner. He was captain his senior year. |

Stan Kemp Stan is considered one of the most versitile athletes to play at Charleroi. He participated in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was the Big 6 scoring champion in 1962. He was an all-state selection and participated in the Big 33 game. Stan received a full scholarship to the University of Virginia and lettered three years. He participated in the professionaly with the Winipeg Blue Boomers of the Canadian Football League. In basketball, he was named All-State his senior year and scored 37 points in the Altoona Holiday Classic. Stan is a retired guidance counselor from Fairfax County Schools in Potomic Falls, Virginia. |

Dennis Laskey Laskey's career as a soccer player and coach spans well over 40 years
and he is recognized as one As a player, Laskey has performed for numerous teams throughout western Pennsylvania. After earning post-season honors as a four-year starting defender at Alderson-Broaddus College, he entered the Navy in 1972. He continued his playing career in Europe with the U.S. Navy Phiblant team in the Mediterranean. Following his discharge from the military, he completed his degree at California University. Laskey also was a member of national championship senior teams in 2003
and 2004. He continues today as varsity men's coach and coordinator of
soccer programs at California University |
