As these systems have become more complex organizations, professional support personnel, such as the school nurse, are increasingly involved in unique roles that are tangential to and supportive of the educational process
The school nurse plays and essential role in assisting the educational organization to accomplish its mission, which, however stated, is the provision of effective educational programs and services to students. For and educational system to accomplish it’s mission, as defined by the system, professional staff must perform their jobs competently. The school nurse’s job responsibilities and functions support the educational system’s mission and objectives.

-Uses a systemic approach to problem solving in nursing practice.

-Contributes to the education of the students by assembling the student, planning and providing appropriate nursing care, and evaluating the identified outcomes of care.

-Uses effective written, verbal and nonverbal communication skills as a positive strategy to achieve nursing goals.

-Establishes and maintains a comprehensive school health program.

-Collaborates with other school professionals and other caregivers, parents to meet the health, development and educational needs of students.

-Collaborates with members of the community in the delivery of health and social services, and utilizes knowledge of community health systems and resources to function as a school community liaison.

-Assists students, families and the school community to achieve optimal levels of wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health education.

-Contributes to nursing and school health through innovations inn practice and participation in research.

-Completes requirements mandated by the state for each student.
