Dear Charleroi Learning Community,

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  Clearly preventing school threats and violence is better than reacting to them.  With this famous quote in mind, the most preventive measure our learning community can employ is to obtain information about potential threats before an individual decides or begins to take action.  We continue to encourage and ask our students, staff, and community for their support by reporting concerns to an administrator or through our Safe School Helpline.

Fortunately, students have already started to report questionable conversations that they have overheard.  Our administrative team and school resource officer have been able to immediately investigate each reported incident.  As of today, each reported incident has been deemed non-threatening.  We can assure you that our students have been safe, and we will continue to investigate each and every report.  Please know that you will be immediately contacted if any report is substantiated.  Procedures are in place to work closely with our school resource officer and the Charleroi Regional Police Department to monitor safety concerns within the Charleroi Area School District

Students, parents and community members should use the Safe School Helpline to report threats of violence, suicide, bullying and illegal activity that could harm children in our schools.  This service provides users the opportunity to leave a message or speak with a live crisis counselor for immediate needs.  The helpline is administered by an independent, outside company.  All communications are PRIVATE, CONFIDENTIAL, and ANONYMOUS.

The Safe School Helpline can be accessed via three methods:  by telephone at 1-800-4-1-VOICE ext. 359 (1-800-418-6423 ext. 359); online at www.safeschoolhelpline.com; or by texting 66746 and typing “TIPS” as the message.

This tip line is monitored 24/7.

Our staff members at Charleroi continue to set aside time with students to listen and encourage them to be a part of the solution.  We want to encourage parents and families to have these conversations at home as well.  The National Association of School Psychologists published a helpful resource on Talking to Children about Violence.  You can find that here.

These are certainly tough times for our schools and communities, and we know that students will follow the examples set by adults. We continue to work with our staff to assist them in doing what they can to maintain a sense of calm and reason in our schools.  If you have questions, please feel free to contact me or your building principal.
