CASD 4th Quarter Grading Plan During Online Instruction

4th Quarter Grading Plan During Online Instruction

We began remote learning on March 30, 2020 and had a two week acclimation period for our students.  In order to preserve the efforts and accomplishments of our students during the first three quarters of this 2019-2020 year, we will maintain our existing grading system for the final quarter of the year. Our students have worked hard during the first three quarters of the school year and we believe that final grades should be representative of those efforts.

Fully recognizing the challenges of Covid-19 and remote online instruction, our teachers will adjust instruction and assessments throughout the fourth quarter. Maintaining our current percentage grading system as usual will allow teachers to communicate our students’ accomplishments in a system that is familiar to both students and parents. Our expectations for students during the fourth quarter are that they put forth their best efforts to engage in learning under the very challenging conditions that currently exist.  High school students in the honors classes will have additional expectations due to the potential for the honors’ weighted grade.

Students’ grades, such as assessments, assignments and participation, for the fourth quarter will be updated by their teachers on a weekly basis in the GoEdustar gradebook system.  Work assigned on or after April 13, 2020 will be entered in GoEdustar for the fourth quarter grade. Additionally, end of year final exams will not be given in any course. Friday, June 5th is the last instructional day of the 2019-2020 school year.

Charleroi Area School District commits to providing the following levels of support for students experiencing difficulty during continuity of instruction at home:

Level 1 - If students are in need of tech support, students/families should submit a help ticket at https://bit.ly/CASDtechhelp.  If the student/family cannot complete the electronic help ticket, they can call their child’s school secretary for assistance with submitting a ticket. Please include the name and grade level of the student, the particular issue and a phone number for the parent.

Elementary Building Secretary: 724-483-3509 Ext. 2261 or Ext. 2260

Middle School Building Secretary: 724-483-3509 Ext. 3011

High School Building Secretary: 724-483-3509 Ext. 3010 or Ext. 3030

Level 2 -  Students who are not engaged in their learning will be first addressed at the teacher level. Teachers will contact students and/or parents multiple times with meaningful two way communication to address concerns and resolve issues with at home learning.

Level 3 -  If students continue to be disengaged in their learning, teachers will contact school counselors to share the student concerns and how the student was addressed by the teacher. School counselors will reach out to the student and/or parent to assist in resolving the matter.

Level 4- If school counselor intervention is not successful, the school counselor should contact the school principal. The principal will communicate with the parent and student in order to resolve the students issue with online instruction.

Level 5 -  If principal intervention is not successful, the superintendent of schools will be notified. The district superintendent will contact the family in order to try to resolve the online learning issue.

If students fail to participate in online learning, it is possible that they will be retained to the same grade level for the 2020-2021 school year.
