Charleroi Area School District Will Shift to Full Virtual Learning Beginning
Monday, November 23, 2020
Charleroi, PA –
After data received this morning, Washington County is now in the “Substantial” COVID 19 Early Warning Dashboard System as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. When identified as substantial, full remote learning is PDE’s recommended learning operational model.
Last week in Washington County, 117 additional positive cases were confirmed, which included a 9.5% positivity rate. A total of 2,928 positive cases have been reported in Washington County since the pandemic began. Furthermore, for the 5th consecutive day, Pennsylvania set its record for Covid- 19 cases with 5,551 cases reported Saturday, November 14 by the PA Department of Health.
The PA Department of Education requested a virtual meeting with all Washington County Superintendents at 10:00 am on Monday, November 16, 2020 to discuss their recommendations for school districts that are in the substantial category.
As a result of recent data and recommendations, the Charleroi Area School District will need to make a significant schedule change in responding to the recent Covid 19 substantial category for our county. The Charleroi Area School District will move to full virtual learning for the two-week period around Thanksgiving break.
The remainder of this week will give students and staff the opportunity to plan for and adjust to the virtual operational model to be implemented during the Thanksgiving holiday.
Please remember to fill out the attendance form daily. During this closure all buildings will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized.
Free breakfast and lunch will be provided for any child (ages 2-18) during virtual learning, on weekends, and the holidays. If you would like to receive meals, please contact the Food Service Department at 724-483-3573, extension 3028 or by email at email@example.com.
Charleroi Area students will attend classes virtually, Monday, November 23 through Wednesday, November 25 and from Tuesday, December 1 through Friday, December 4. As planned, Thursday, November 26; Friday, November 27; and Monday, November 30 the Charleroi Area School District will be closed due to the Thanksgiving Holiday break.
Mon Valley Career and Technical students can choose to attend classes there either in person at the Technology Center (if you are currently in person) or online classes are available to all students. The Charleroi School District will provide student transportation to MVC&T from Monday, November 23 through Friday, December 4. This transportation will be the same schedule as the beginning of the year.
Our plan is to resume our Monday through Thursday hybrid in person learning schedule in all buildings on our campus beginning Monday, December 7, however this will be dependent on the status of COVID-19 in Washington County coming out of the Thanksgiving holiday. Please note that you are welcome to keep your child online when we return, if you choose to do so. You will need to notify your child’s school counselor if you are making a change.
We know this is a difficult time and this temporary closure won’t be easy for many families. Please know that we continue to act in the best interest of our students and staff, with their health and safety at the forefront. We thank you for your ongoing understanding and cooperation.
