Extending Remote Learning

With guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH), the Charleroi Area School District will extend remote learning for all students through January 3, 2021.  Our hope was to return in early December, but there are several factors that impacted our decision

CASD Attestation Ensuring Implementation of Mitigation Efforts

Whereas, the commonwealth is experiencing its highest daily case counts since the beginning of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, resulting in increased hospitalizations, nearly 10,000 deaths, and heightened risk to the most vulnerable Pennsylvanians; Whereas, the Wolf Administration has identified new mitigation efforts, including an attestation process for public school entities that elect to continue in-person instruction for students in counties designated as exhibiting “Substantial” transmission of COVID-19 for two or more consecutive weeks based on a disease incidence rate of 100 or more cases per 100,000 residents and/or a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) percent positivity rate of 10 percent or greater; Whereas, as of November 23, 2020, 59 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties met one or both of these standards; Whereas, Pennsylvania recommends that school entities in counties with Substantial disease transmission transition to remote-only instructional models; Whereas, as of November 20, 2020, many public school entities have exercised their local discretion to continue in-person instruction for all or some students

Basketball Scrimmages Closed to Spectators

According to the CDC, in-person gatherings that do not properly follow health protocols are at higher risk of spreading COVID-19. The CDC, State and County Health Departments have discouraged the public from gathering in groups to mitigate the spread of disease.

With the home basketball scrimmages quickly approaching, we know parents, siblings and peers will be interested in attending. However, at this time all home basketball scrimmages will be closed to spectators.

Shift to Full Virtual Learning Beginning Monday, November 23, 2020

Charleroi Area School District Will Shift to Full Virtual Learning Beginning
Monday, November 23, 2020

Charleroi, PA – After data received this morning, Washington County is now in the “Substantial” COVID 19 Early Warning Dashboard System as defined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. When identified as substantial, full remote learning is PDE’s recommended learning operational model.

Last week in Washington County, 117 additional positive cases were confirmed, which included a 9.5% positivity rate. A total of 2,928 positive cases have been reported in Washington County since the pandemic began.  Furthermore, for the 5th consecutive day, Pennsylvania set its record for Covid- 19 cases with 5,551 cases reported Saturday, November 14 by the PA Department of Health.
The PA Department of Education requested a virtual meeting with all Washington County Superintendents at 10:00 am on Monday, November 16, 2020 to discuss their recommendations for school districts that are in the substantial category.

As a result of recent data and recommendations, the Charleroi Area School District will need to make a significant schedule change in responding to the recent Covid 19 substantial category for our county. The Charleroi Area School District will move to full virtual learning for the two-week period around Thanksgiving break.
