12th Grade: Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV)

Dear Parent / Guardian,

The Department of Health requires students to have certain vaccines or documentation of medical or religious exemptions in order to be admitted into school.  Students entering 12th grade must have a second meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV) according to regulation 28 PA School Code 23.85.  The first MCV was completed for attendance in 7th grade.

The MCV protects adolescents from the following very serious illness:
Meningitis: Adolescents are at increased risk of getting this infection.  This is a rare, but extremely serious disease that kills up to 10 percent of those who get it.  Up to 20 percent of survivors will have serious long-term or permanent complications such as brain damage, kidney damage, deafness, or amputations.

As we begin to prepare for your child to enter the 12th grade next year, I wanted to give you advanced notice of this requirement.  If your child has had the two MCV immunizations, please provide documentation to me prior to the end of this school year.  If your child receives these two immunizations during the summer, I will need the documentation prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

If I do not receive documentation for the required MCV, your child will risk exclusion from starting 12th grade.  Please contact your doctor to obtain information or schedule an appointment.   If you have any questions, please email me.  dcannon@charleroisd.org

Thank you,

Dana Cannon RN, BSN, CSN
